Counseling heals the soul.

Sitting behind my consulting table, patiently waiting for my antenatal clients, then I heard knock. Guess who?

One of the pregnant women, she walked in with a very tensed facial expression. I welcomed her with a smile and she smiled back. I thought she came for an antenatal visit but that wasn’t it. Then what is it? “I am not feeling well, I can’t sleep for some couple of days now and I feel very week and dizzy”.

I quickly requested for some lab investigations and the results were all normal. So what is wrong? I asked. We started a conversation and how she feels about the pregnancy and lo and behold, she was going through difficult times at home.

She is a known HIV positive but she has refused to accept the condition because her partner claims he is negative and has discontinued her relationship with her.

This woman was mentally unstable, she spoke with tears rolling down her eyes, crying bitterly and unable to console.

This woman needs counseling I said. I talked to her, counselled her and trust me, she left the clinic with a smiling face. She just couldn’t stop saying thank you. What would have happened if she didn’t get someone to talk to? Let’s be each other’s keeper.

Indeed counseling heals the soul.
